Abstract
A three years (2007-2010) program, the Regional Program of Physical Oceanography in West Africa (PROPAO), supported and funded by the French Foreign Ministry through the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), is presently going on. This program is carried by several laboratories of West Africa countries of the Gulf of Guinea (Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire) and France (IRD/LEGOS), in order to study the oceanic (sea surface temperature, salinity currents) and atmospheric (wind) conditions along the coast. One of the first step of this program was to develop a network an autonomous thermometers from Nigeria to Ivory Coast (already initiated in 2005 and 2006 in Benin and Togo as part of the French AMMA/ EGEE program) in order to i) better describe and study the coastal upwelling dynamics; ii) validate historical data sets and satellite products; iii) contribute to local environmental studies. Present status of works and perspectives for a potential PROPAO continuation by 2010 will be presented.
This program is also dedicated to capacity building and formation. The new “Regional Master of Physical Oceanography and Applications”, launched in Cotonou (Benin) in October 2008 with the French “University Paul Sabatier” in Toulouse, and established in close relationship with PROPAO and AMMA, will also be presented.
