Abstract
Numerous meteorological, hydrological and agricultural applications require high resolution rain fields as input to models or for purpose of validation. The required resolution may be as fine as 1 km in space and 5 minutes in time. The AMMA-CATCH rain gage networks in Benin and Niger provide a suitable database to provide such high resolution rain fields. However due the dynamic of the rainy systems, the simple interpolation of 5-minute point rainfall data fails in correctly transcribing the strong intermittency of small time step rain fields. To overcome this issue a methodology based on Lagrangian kriging is proposed. The method explicitly takes into account the kinematics of the rainy systems in order to interpolate 5-minutes rainfall intensities in a Lagrangian reference frame
A systematic comparison shows that Lagrangian kriging performs better than the simple kriging interpolation technique for both the Niger and the Benin sites. The interpolation performances of several kinematic models are also evaluated.
This study opens encouraging perspectives for modelling studies in hydrometeorology over the meso-scale AMMA sites and also provides an original framework for characterizing rainfall event typology in West Africa.
